Lockdowns and Dragons

Today while scrolling down my newsfeed an article by Julian Price discussing the increasing role of video games in people’s social lives caught my eye and after reading through it, I believe that this is a topic that is also relevant to Dungeons and Dragons especially for those stuck in lockdown during the current pandemic.   Julian throughout his article discusses how since the beginning of the pandemic increasing amounts of people are turning towards the digital worlds provided by video games instead of social media to catch up with friends, family and even go on virtual dates (Although I can’t say that I personally would encourage the latter). Many of the people interviewed for the article even went on to talk about their proposed improvements in mental health brought about by the social and escapist elements of online gaming.   So now you’re probably thinking how does this relate to D&D? Well although I’m lucky enough to currently live in an area that i...

What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a tabletop role playing game that was created by Ernest Gary Gygax and David Arneson in 1974 that as of writing currently has five core rulebooks with Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition being the most recent (and also my favourite).   D&D from my point of view serves as a platform/sandbox where people can utilise their imagination to realistically do whatever they want with a group of friends, which in my eyes is the charm of the game. Whether that’s fighting dragons, exploring the high seas, saving the world, or all of the above. Now that I’ve hopefully drawn your attention lets move on to how to play.  The game is played at its most basic level with dice, the players handbook , and your imagination as well as two types o...

Why Dungeons and Dragons?

Why is Dungeons and Dragons my pass time of choice? Well, it’s a long story….   It was 2014 and I was in my first year of high school sitting with a group of friends during lunch break when I overhear one of my friends talking to an acquaintance about a new game he had found. Hearing the mention of what I had assumed to be a videogame I eagerly joined in only to have my mind blown over the following 10 minutes as they explained this board game where you could adventure a fantasy world that allowed you to do anything you wanted. That while not entirely accurate to D&D as a game in of itself was enough to have my 12-year-old self sold on the idea, which led to the creation of the D&D group and campaign that I proceeded to spend the following 5 years with. Over that time D&D allowed me to make many long-term friends but also to my surprise helped with a problem I had always struggled with.   For pretty much as long as I can remember I’ve been the sort o...
